USING YOUR ISP'S SMTP SERVER

If you set up your email account using mail.domain.com as your outgoing server, and you can receive email but cannot send, it is most likely the case that your Internet Service Provider, or ISP (such as Earthlink, MSN, Windstream, etc) does not allow you to send email using the Q5 Media servers.

Some ISP's do not allow their customers to send email out using a third party SMTP server (such as Q5 Media's servers). In that case, you may need to change your outgoing SMTP settings to reflect those of your ISP instead of using mail.domain.com (where domain.com is your Web site's domain name.)

If you have set things up properly (remember, the Q5 Media servers require that you use SMTP Authentication...but NOT Secure Password Authentication (SPA)) and you cannot send, go back and change your settings for Outgoing Server or SMTP Server to be that of your ISP (such as smtp.myisp.com) instead of the same as your Incoming Server or POP Server (which will always be mail.domain.com, where domain.com is your Web site domain.)

If you can receive email but cannot send, the problem is most likely with your SMTP settings and your ISP. Please read the tutorials thoroughly and then contact your ISP (the company that provides Internet access to your home or office) before contacting Q5 Media about the issue.

SMTP Authentication: Q5 Media requires that you use SMTP Authentication when sending using our servers. This means you need to send your username and password not only when receiving mail but when sending as well. Your ISP may require you use SMTP Authentication, too, or does NOT require authentication. You will need to check with your ISP on this. If you have checked the SMTP Authentication option when setting up your email account for use with Q5 Media SMTP servers, and you switch to using your ISP's server and it does NOT require authentication, un-check the option to use authentication.

If your ISP requires SMTP Authentication: In the case that you are using your ISP's SMTP server AND it requires SMTP Authentication, you will need to not only set yout Outgoing Server or SMTP Server to your ISP's server but you will also need to provide your username and password for this server.

For Outlook Express: Enter your ISP's SMTP server information under 'Outgoing Server.' Check 'My Server Requires Authentication' then click the 'Settings' button. Choose 'Log on using' and then enter your ISP username and password. Click OK to finish. Visual

For Outlook 2000/XP/2003/2007: Enter your ISP's SMTP server information under 'Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)'. Click the 'More Settings...' button and then the 'Outgoing Server' tab. Choose 'Log on using' and then enter your ISP username and password. Check the 'Remember Password' box. Click OK to finish. Visual

For Eudora: You will need to set up a 'Relay Personality.' See this visual for more information.

For Thunderbird/Netscape Mail: You will need to set up your ISP as the default Outgoing Server (SMTP) and use that to send mail. See this visual for more information.

For OSX Mail: Under 'Outgoing Mail Server' click "Server Settings..." or "Options." In the new window that comes up, type in your ISP's SMTP server name, choose 'Password' authentication and type in your ISP username and password.

For Entourage: For 'SMTP Server' type in your ISP's SMTP server. Click the 'Click here for advanced sending options' button. Check the 'SMTP server requires authentication' box, and choose 'Log In Using.' Type in your ISP username and password.
